POSITION SUMMARY
The Steel Operations and Fabrication Manager (SOFM) plans production and manufacturing required for all structural and miscellaneous steel projects and oversees their progress along the way in a safe, timely and cost-effective manner. Responsible for all aspects of planning, organization, implementation and scheduling of Production. Responsible for taking a project from point of award to final-close-out and preventing safety incidents, ensuring quality performance, maintaining project schedule and delivering excellent customer service. SOFM will manage multiple projects at a time depending on size, complexity, and geographic location.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Essential functions include but are not limited to the following:
- Coordinates with vendors for material purchasing, sub-contract assemblies, special requirements, etc.
- Must be a strong communicator as you will be communicating with internal/external customers, as well as third party vendors and subcontractors.
- Works with Detailer to specify most efficient means & methods of fabrication.
- Reviews shop and field drawings from Detailing for accuracy and professionalism prior to submitting them to the customer for approval.
- Leads the decision-making process for capital equipment, building layout, machine additions and/or replacements.
- Assists Fab Foreman with evaluation of Fab employees, managing daily activities.
- Participates in the interviewing and hiring process with the Fab Foreman.
- Identifies facilities improvements and oversees building maintenance, upkeep, and repairs to always maintain a professional appearance.
- Directs and documents equipment Preventative Maintenance.
ADDITIONAL NICE TO HAVE’S
- Receives job from Estimator and determines capacity, schedule, and manufacturing requirements.
- Tracks job progress, billing, updates Accounting for progress payments, live job costing.
- Calculates total man-hours required and logs completed man-hours per job, daily. Works with Fab Foreman to determine current and future manpower needs.
- Documents historical data to assist Estimating in the development of standardized production rates indicating accurate production capabilities.
- Prioritizes and develops production schedule based on active workload. Re-schedules jobs as issues arise, i.e., material shortages, change notices, etc.
- Coordinates with Logistics for material deliveries.
- Leads the evaluation of job profit margins, costing vs. actual, etc.
- Investigates details of cost overruns for improvement opportunities.
- Serves as a back-up for the Estimator as needed.
QUALIFICATIONS / REQUIREMENTS
- High school diploma required.
- Technologically savvy. Strong user of MS Office and a strong desire to learn.
- Good communication and organization skills
- Must be a self-starter, self-motivated, and customer-focused
- Proven working experience in Steel Operations and Fabrication management
- Expert knowledge of means and methods, material types, construction details and relevant rules, regulations and quality standards
- Familiarity with American Welding Society (AWS) and American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) standards, codes, practices, and procedures.
- Understanding of all facets of the steel fabrication and erection process
- Ability to plan and see the “big picture”

WORKING ENVIRONMENT
The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; some climbing and balancing; some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally, the job requires 10% sitting, 45% walking, and 45% standing. The job is performed outdoors, indoors and in various geographic locations.
