University of Kentucky – Shively Track & Field Project
E&W clears hurdles to complete track retaining walls
East & Westbrook was the selected contractor for the structural concrete for the new university of Kentucky Shivley Track and Field complex. This work included over 2,000 lineal feet of cast in place concrete walls and retaining structures exceeding heights of 16’. The work was completed in one of the rainiest summers in recent history for the Lexington, KY area. This required the construction schedule to be compressed in order to complete the facility before the opening spring track meet. A major effort went into coordination of other trades working onsite, including the specialty track surface installation contractor that was scheduled more than 12 months in advance.
While hurdles such as poor weather can be encountered on many construction projects, when the completion date is fixed because of scheduled events, it requires strong project management and quality leadership and performance in the field to cross the finish line.
